A lot of people have that impression, but I think it is just because people are taking the wrong approach to it. Trying to make a "WoW killer" is just insane. Nothing is going to strip away enough players to support something with the kind of budget that WoW has. I think though that an MMO that sets more realistic goals and could sustain itself with a smaller user base than over 10 million people could definitely be successful. It's like people seem to think the only definition of "successful" is being the undisputed, competition crushing number 1 hit making billions of dollars and anything less is failure.

There is really nothing remarkable about WoW, other than being just very solidly executed. But that is what makes for big hits. Just look at music, television, movies... any other medium really, the biggest hits are rarely things that do something new and interesting, they are things that are familiar with a solid execution. To that extent I could see another MMO competing with (or co-existing with) WoW if it were executed similarly but in a different genre. I'm sure there are people out there still that would play an MMO but just aren't into orcs and elves.

That may be a *tad* extreme... although we have said it is definitely not Savage 3 and is not the same style of game as Savage 1 or 2.
