This is a stale thread, but I finally got glc installed and I am having the same trouble that stony was having. My machine is plenty powerful but I have to turn everything low or off to get framerates above 15. It is still very choppy. It is clearly the recording because if I have everything on high and stop the recording my fps goes from 10 to 70. Perhaps this is an issue of having to compile on a 64 bit OS and glc is natively 32 bit?

In the meantime i have no problems anymore - ok recording while playing makes no sense - but recording replays works great.

The FPS will drop to 25 by default.

I tried recording a replay and it really wasn't of great quality. Do you decrease your resolution when recording?

You can probably increase the FPS a lot by lowering the game resolution. It might not matter much for the game by itself but it will mean waaay less data glc has to save to disk every second.

Just tried some recording again. FPS is OK during recording using the glc-encode scripts and recording at 1440:900. However, using mencoder to to encode on the fly leaves the final movie, well, not that great. Any suggestions for improving the mencoder portion of the script?

I just do in manually

glc-capture savage2 (record with shift + F8)
glc-play -i 2 ./savage2-bin..........
glc-play -y numberfrominformation ./savage2-bin...... -o name.y4m
glc-play -a numberfrominformation ./savage2-bin...... -o name.wav
x264 --crf 24 -o name.mp4 name.y4m

Thats how i do it - that gives me a better quality as glc-capture.

are the last two lines a single command, stony

edit: nevermind, i see what you are doing here. glc-capture sure does use a ton of disk space!

got a new hdd now and started playing around with this again.

if you invoke glc-capture without options, it seems to have 25 fps and fps-lock as default-settings. this explains why your fps drop to 25.

setting the fps manually with the -f switch on the commandline disables fps-lock, so you can play at higher fps

personally, i use 15 fps to record, which still makes smooth videos and reduces the load a bit.

also, after a recent sav2-crash, my settings were reset, and as i wanted to install wiwi's ui 1.5 anyways, i deleted my ~/.savage2/ and did my settings from scratch again. my performance is a lot better now (not only while recording).

furthermore, the switch "-e bgr" saves your cpu the load of jpeg-compression and thus further increases performance (only about 5 fps for me).
if you have a fast harddisk (sata2 or even an ssd), you might also want to try recording without file-compression (-z none).
and of courses, --disable-audio will disable the sound-subsystem and gain more performance. i am doing this because i am using oss4 and glc only supports alsa natively.
