Default Map: Vermillion

Vermilion

A small sized map in middle of a desert with 3 expansion mines and 1 scar. Surrounded by dunes the area is lost in middle of the desert with but 1 small oasis sustaining life, which houses the higher yield expansion mine.

The map was influenced partly by the savage 1 map Cerilian.
The cactus' were stolen from Skope's map dustbowl.

Few more pics as links so the post doesnt take forever to load.

Strider is making large maps all the time. I think it's great that someone finally creates a smaller map.

Is it size 8?

Yup, size 8 around Eden sized. Figured we needed some more small maps around in case clan matches start happening a bit.

Still just putting up some more cover and giving it some more objects, so it doesn't feel to empty even as a desert, before i put it up for looking

Just hide at the oasis, there's some grass and not much sand at it ^_^

I NEED A LINK!!!

Anyway, I agree with the smalll sized map, the only downside is it is hard to put in secret passageways etc
BTW: those cactuses in pic 3 are weird: IDK they just look too shiny for the terrain around them (they might look fine when you are ingame)

From the screenshots it looks decent, I expect some minor collision issues with those ruin structures though.
The map border looks a bit too much hilly, needs more texture mixing.
Oasis grass looks a tad too much artifical, mix it up with alpha tool a bit, make it more natural.
The gold mine position kinda worries me that the one on legion side has more advantage since its open to the top mine.
Make sure that the lair/stronghold have enough space for tech.
Still I want to have a closer look at it

*waits for download link*

The cactus' are a bit shiny from the light, but i don't know if there's a way i can reduce that.

The border is rather hilly, i was trying to get a dunes effect that you could see them continuing from the players view which is why the further back ones keep getting higher. it still needs to be fixed up but that will come a little later

For the oasis textures, i tried fixing it up a bit, think it still needs some more

The gold mines do give the humans a bit of an advantage getting a closer spawn place to the oasis mine. the beast one is supposed to get them closer to the hs and more importantly gets them closer to the humans base. I tried to go with their intended style to encourage them to be aggressive early on.

The bases have more than enough space for tech and towers, if anything i should remove a bit of the space

i wont comment on everything i like, since the list would be a lot longer then. so i just point out some things i didnt like:

- the small oasis: the placement at the slope seems weird.

- the treecave: doent fit the scenery imho.

- the bigger oasis: remove the cactuses next to the water, add A LITTLE foliage and i would prefer grass1 (but thats subjective)

- the mountainborder doesnt look like dunes. i tried to use the large blurred circle with a medium strength to create some rolling dunes which was quite succesfull but its hard to make a sensefull impassable border then. anyway, you already stated you will improve the mountainborder.

(btw: i had a similiar problem on my swampthemed map. so i know its not easy to implement something else then a steep mountain)

- make the sun a bit less red.
