Default No Smoking.

No Smoking is a mod that disables/lessens smoke, dust, and fire graphical effects in the game to improve performance. This mod is highly recommended for players with poor rigs that cannot handle the excessive amounts of particles in the game. If you notice a drop in the framerate around buildings that kick up dust, smoke, or fire, this mod is for you!

This is mod number 37 in the repository.

Current version: 0.5

Previous versions:
Instructions to use this mod:
  • Move the desired file into the correct folder, as indicated below
  • Pop open the champaign, you're done. The game will automatically load it every time you play.
Correct folder locations:

Linux: /home/<username>/Savage 2/game/
Windows 7:
C:\Program Files\Savage 2 - A tortured soul\game\
Windows Vista: C:\Program Files\Savage 2 - A tortured soul\game\
Windows XP: C:\Program Files\Savage 2 - A tortured soul\game\
Mac:
1. Press Finder
2. Press Applications
3. Right click 'Savage 2 - A tortured soul', and press Show containing files
4. Open Game folder
5. Move file here

WARNING: This mod is currently not compatible with mod 73 "Glow before you blow!" Moreover, each version of No Smoking is incompatible with other versions of No Smoking; I recommend you use the most recent version.

Special thanks to Wiwi, whose advice saved me a considerable amount of time!

Version 0.1:
  • Smoke, fire, and dust from human buildings disabled.
  • Dust, glowing, and near-death dust/smoke from beast buildings disabled.
  • Purple dust from Conjurers when they build disabled.
Version 0.2:
  • All particle effects associated with behemoths have been disabled.
  • All particle effects associated with steambuchets have been disabled.
  • Nearly all particle effects associated with battering rams have been disabled.
    • The exception is Protective Flames; particle spawnrate was instead divided by ten.
  • Tempest:
    • Idling particles have been disabled.
    • No changes have been made to ethereal form
    • Pushback now displays almost no particles at all.
    • All particle spawnrates and counts associated with meteor have been divided by ten.
  • Some unnecessary files were removed, dropping the total size of this mod.
Version 0.3:
  • Predator's Blaze particles were lessened.
  • Predator's Fireball particles are almost completely gone (it uses a rock model, so it's still visible).
  • Predator's buffs use no particles.
  • Predator's Fear debuff uses less particles.
  • Predator's Fear cast and Venomous Strike were left untouched.
  • Hunters no longer display any particles at all for either melee mode. Instead, a glowing circle appears near their feet (lavender for Frenzy and olive for Venomous).
  • Hunters no longer emit particles for Hibernation or Glide Strike.
  • Hunters display far fewer particles for Wing Spin.
  • Shapeshifter claws no longer emit blue particles for ranged attacks.
  • Lightning Strikes on the terrain no longer smolder.
  • Acid Spray was left untouched.
  • Sacrifice no longer displays particles at all. Gibs still go flying at its conclusion, though, and the sacrificing Shapeshifter is still covered in blue electricity.
  • Venom Spores continue to use particles, but display less on impact.
  • Neither Mana Well nor Poisonous Venus display particles on placement or death, though Poisonous Venus still uses the same effects for firing.
  • Shaman no longer display particles for healing, storm shield, or reincarnate (did reincarnate even have any? I don't remember anymore!)
  • Healing Chant was left untouched, as was the displayed state for Storm Shield. Snare and Mind Warp are also unchanged.
  • Numerous unneeded files were removed, greatly reducing this mod's file size.
Version 0.4:
  • Builder guns no longer emit smoke in 1st person view.
  • Builder gadgets no longer display explosions.
  • Shield Generator STILL displays graphical effects from blocking shots. Will get to that later.
  • Chaplain abilities emit less particles.
  • Lego buffs emit less particles.
  • Lego guns create less smoke.
  • Savage's Rage emits less particles.
  • Savage's guns no longer emit smoke in 1st person view.
  • Marksman's crossbow bolt trail is lessened.
  • Marksman's Backstab emits far fewer particles.
  • Marksman's Demolition Charge produces less smoke on explosion.
  • Devourer's Vomit graphical effect lessened.
  • Devourer emits far fewer particles idling/moving.
  • Devourer's Decay emits less smoke.
  • Devourer's Devour emits no particles.
  • Devourer's Gut Launcher emits no particles in flight, less particles on impact.
  • Malphai no longer smoke or burn while idling or moving. Footstep explosions still there (damn them)!
  • Malphas death greatly toned down.
  • Malphas abilities emit fewer particles.
  • Revenants no longer emit particles while idling or moving.
  • Revenants no longer explode on death. Their armor pieces still go flying, but that's it.
  • Revenant Defile emits no particles.
  • Revenant Atrophy particles lessened.
  • Revenant Scorch emits less particles.
  • Hunter graphical add-on is now integrated into the main mod. If you previously downloaded the graphical add-on, it is no longer needed with version 0.4 and onward.
  • Shapeshifter's Sacrifice graphical effects now use the same timing as in mod 73.
Version 0.5:
  • Gunshots no longer kick sand up from the ground.
  • Ranged attacks no longer produce any graphical effects upon hitting a Shield Generator.
  • Boar quill particle effects have been reduced by 90%.
  • Blood has been removed on regular melee attacks.
  • Poisoned states now make the afflicted glow dull green instead of emitting poison particles.
  • Life Leak no longer makes the afflicted bleed (untested).

Awesome job and waiting for more.

HYP, it's for those people who's computers have FPS issues even on low graphics settings.

Because even with all settings on low (like me) some people still can get very laggy when some particle effects are being rendered.

HYP if you don't want to use this mod - don't use it. But stop complaining, many people requested this mod and Mbomber was kind enough to make it; so don't ruin it...

Anyway, here's a pic:

Xnixnix mentioned he encountered a slight slowdown with the Chloro's sky ray effect. I can easily change this to match the Shield Tower's aura effect, if that's less of a problem (I actually once did that while toying around, and even changed the color of the aura.

You guys think this is necessary?

On a side note, I doubt I'll be able to work on this mod much at all over the course of the weekend as I will be attending my friends' wedding.

EDIT: Although I haven't tested it myself or gone through the files, I anticipate that this mod should be fully compatible with Wiwi's interface mod. Perhaps someone can check this out for me?

Well, I don't see why it shouldn't, since I don't touch effects at all and this doesn't touch ui at all.

Also, I chuckled at some of the comments insde the effect files.

Didn't see any problems with WUI.

This gave me a HUGE increase in overall performance, even as Commander when I'm far away from particle effects during building/repairs. Makes the game much less taxing on my system, and I could probably go so far as to increase some of the other sliders that have nothing to do with lighting and effects.

And @ HYP:

Not everyone has a decent gaming rig. Even decent ones can have problems or slowdowns with the massive number of particle effects that are present in the game. This makes the game more playable for people with such systems, as there is no way to tone down the particle effects through the UI. Please refrain from comments if they really don't have anything at all to do with the mod... just seems like whining to me.
